This Big Leaf Maple was cut up for firewood by my good friend David Taber, a wood worker, who once home with it noticed the fabulous patterns known variously as Fiddleback, Flame, or Tiger maple.  The undulating, shimmery patterns are caused by distorted wood fiber growth, often resulting from heavy branch compression, hilly growing conditions, or genetic factors, creating a 3D effect.
